Who is your favorite Boston Red Sox player of all time? Here’s the answer

A couple of weeks back we here at the Sports Chowdah teamed up with our friends at the Bangor Daily News to give away some Red Sox tickets. All folks had to do to enter was tell us the name of their all time favorite Red Sox player.

We had hundreds and hundreds of entries. And the results took me by surprise.

Remember I said “all time.”

The winner in a landslide: Mookie Betts. He captured almost 40% of the votes. There were more than three dozen players named!

Granted he was red hot when the poll was taken. And I do think he is the most popular player on this team. Talented. Likeable. Seems like a great guy.

But favorite of all time?! WOW! How quickly we forget.

Dustin Pedroia finished as the runner-up. He does have longevity. An MVP trophy and two World Series rings. I get it.

Finishing a distant third was David Ortiz. I couldn’t be more surprised if I woke up with my ear sewn to the floor. (Thanks Chevy Chase)

I know Big Papi would have won this as recently as last year.

Chris Sale was fourth. Oh my.

I guess the BDN Maine readers forgot about Pedro? Manny? Jim Ed? Captain Carl? The Splendid Splinter? Boggs? Dewey? Even Roger?

In fact, Hanley got more votes than Manny or Pedro!

Mitch Moreland got the same number of votes as Ted Williams.

As you digest that last thought, I guess it’s an important lesson in life, that today more than ever people truly want to know “what have you done for me lately?”
