The Maine football team is getting set to battle Central Michigan this weekend.
This is their second straight game against an FBS opponent, or “Big Boy” program.
Maine is 1-0 against the bigger schools already this year as they came from 21-0 down to beat Western Michigan two weeks ago.
The Black Bears have beaten three FBS teams total including UMass a couple of years ago and Mississippi State in 2004.
It is extremely rare to win two “payday” games in one season.
Tyson McHatten from Maine Athletics shares this:
“Nine teams have defeated two FBS opponents in the same season, dating back to 1978.
The last to do so was Portland St. in 2015 (defeating Washington St. and North Texas).
One thing to note is that, included in those nine teams, is UConn in both 2000 and 2001. Those were UConn’s two transition years to 1-A so, even though they were not fully funded as a 1-A program yet, there schedule was 1-A heavy, giving them more opportunities for FBS wins.”
Let’s see if Saturday is historical for the Black Bears.
