I’d trade a few championships to have that 2004 Sox euphoria one more time

As you know the Boston Bruins are playing for Lord Stanley’s Cup right now. If they win, it will be the 13th championship for a New England team since 2002.

13! In just 17 years! We have 6 Superbowl wins. 4 World Series Titles. 1 NBA banner, and now maybe a second Cup. Its been the most awesome run by a city or region in American sports history.

But isn’t there just a tiny part of you that misses the not so good ol days?

Ok let me explain. I was just on vacation and I read Dan Shaughnessy’s book on Terry Francona. Most of it has to do with the 2004 Red Sox. I couldn’t put the book down as I relived the rollercoaster season that saw Nomar traded, the 3-0 comeback over the Yankees and a sweep of the Cardinals ending an 86 year old championship drought.

Seriously, I get filled with genuine emotion every time I relive that Sox run. Same with the 2002 Patriots beating the heavily favored Rams on a last second field goal. I love the feeling! And know I will never feel it again.

Think about where we are now. Did you celebrate the 2018 World Series win the same way you did in ’04? Or ’07?

Or the Pats win over the now LA Rams this year? I watched. Then went to bed. It’s not the same.

Did you know the TV ratings for the Cup Final on NBC are higher in St Louis than Boston? Yup. They haven’t won in a lifetime and means a ton to them. It’s just not quite as special for us. We’ve been here often.

When you don’t win much, the thrill of victory is euphoric.

But when you have a pocket full of trophies, the outcome of any championship game or series is a little anti climatic.

Would you trade a few titles to go back in time to relive, and truly bask in the glow and unequalled high of the ’04 World Series or the ’02 Pats wins?

I would.
