Lots of former UMaine men’s hockey players are making news

Over the past two weeks, there have been a couple of ice hockey coaching hirings that have grabbed my attention. Former UMaine captain Greg Moore was recently named head coach of the Chicago Steel of the USHL, while Tyler Walsh was named an assistant coach at Colby College.

Moore most recently served as an assistant coach with the USA National Development program. Prior to that, he played professionally for a decade, seeing time in the National Hockey League with both the New York Rangers and the Columbus Blue Jackets.

A native of Lisbon, Maine, Moore played at UMaine from 2002-06. He led the Black Bears to the 2004 NCAA Title game and was named a Hobey Baker finalist, an All-American, and a Hockey East First Team selection.

The USHL is the nation’s only Tier I junior hockey league. Former Black Bear and fellow Maine native Mark Anthoine played his junior hockey for the Chicago Steel.

Tyler Walsh joins Blaise MacDonald’s staff at Colby College. MacDonald previously served as the head coach at UMass Lowell. The Mules are coming off a trip to the NCAA Tournament where they advanced to the NCAA semifinals. He joins former Black Bear Mike Latendresse on the staff.

Since 2016, Walsh has served as head coach at North Yarmouth Academy in southern Maine. He began his coaching career as a student assistant at Maine. He then served as the director of hockey operations at Division I Canisius. Following his stint at Canisius, he worked with the national development program in Michigan, before returning to Maine. He is the son of the late, great Shawn Walsh and the grandson of the late Ron Mason, legendary coach at Michigan State.

In other University of Maine news, former pitcher/catcher Mike Connolly has been called up by the Sacramento River Cats, the triple-A team of the San Francisco Giants. In double-A this season, Connolly is 3-2 this season on the mound with a 3.99 ERA. He has pitched in 15 games, the majority of them in relief. He has fanned 38 batters in 38.1 innings pitched this season.

Best of luck to all three. It’s so neat to be able to see people you know follow their dreams and achieve success.
